The car charges in the garage while you check its status later on your phone. The next morning, you only care whether there is enough energy for the journey. At month-end, you may need the consumption record for that same session.
You experience wallbox, app and cloud as one system, but separate parts do the work. Understanding the paths taken by energy and data makes it easier to decide what to expect from each.
The local system works when you plug in
In our example, you arrive home and connect the car to Zaptec Go 2. The installation, cable and car permit 11 kW charging. Start conditions are met and charging begins.
The wallbox manages its local connection to the car and its own operation. Energy travels from the building supply through the device and cable to the car. The phone is not part of this electrical path.
During alternating-current (AC) home charging, the car's onboard charger converts AC into the direct current needed by the battery (Zaptec's guide to AC charging). The vehicle's acceptance limit therefore matters too.
Your phone shows a status and interface
Inside, you open the app to answer a simple question: is charging progressing? It displays the states and controls available under your permissions (Zaptec app).
You need not return to the garage. If something requires action, the appropriate interface provides the next step. The phone gives access to what is happening there.
Treat online status and actual charging separately. Zaptec also documents connectivity, power and cable-lock state as distinct data (Charger state data). An online charger may still be waiting; online only confirms connectivity.
The cloud joins data and remote management
Here, cloud means a remote service reached over the internet. It carries charger data to the interface on your phone. The Pro network documentation, for example, describes status reporting, command receipt and encrypted communication (Zaptec network communication).
In daily life, the phone need not be beside the car. Remote access requires both phone and charging system to reach the service.
Consider device and service together. Comparing only rated power does not show how you will monitor charging or retrieve its data.
After two hours, you are working with energy data
In our example, charging runs steadily at 11 kW for two hours. That is 22 kWh measured at the charger: 11 kW × 2 hours. It is theoretical; real power may vary.
11 kW is charging power, while 22 kWh is energy delivered through the charger. The second figure matters for month-end consumption. Energy stored in the battery may differ because of conversion and auxiliary consumption.
The integrated MID meter in our example Go 2 measures consumption (Go 2 metering and features). To interpret the session later, retain its time and associated user.
The report answers the monthly question
Weeks later, you want to know the energy the car used at home. You need the list of completed sessions, not the device's current state.
Zaptec Portal lets you view and export charging data by period, installation, charger or user (Zaptec Portal). Before buying, check that your own access can produce the data you need.
One family sharing a car may need less detail than company and private cars together. Explain the intended use early; it determines which service fits.
An external service can change the division of roles
If an operator or external energy controller is involved, establish which system controls charging. With OCPP Cloud, Zaptec manages energy sharing. With direct OCPP, the external central system gains control and Zaptec's own advanced load and phase management is not supported in that mode (The two connection modes).
What matters to you is where charging is started or changed and who provides support. At handover, test a full session from plugging in to retrieving the data. Record the interface and responsible provider. The separate parts then form one clear daily routine.
